Chris Haverly Car Accident Wytheville, VA Death, Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that we mourn the tragic passing of Chris Haverly, who lost his life in a devastating automobile accident on Interstate 81 near Wytheville, Virginia. His death has left his family, friends, and the entire animal rescue community heartbroken, as the world has lost a true hero whose life was defined by service, compassion, and unwavering dedication.

Chris was proudly known as an Appalachia Bulldog, a devoted Kentucky fan, and a man who never hesitated to help anyone — human or animal — in need. Those who knew him describe him as kind, selfless, and driven by a mission far greater than himself. Our hearts are broken, but we are all better people for having known him.

Chris was the founder of Tri-State Animal Rescue, where he helped save more than 14,000 dogs and cats over the past decade. He dedicated countless hours and miles to transporting homeless pets to shelters and rescue organizations where they had a better chance at life. Week after week, he rose before dawn, loading his van to the brim, traveling from Big Stone Gap to Staunton, Bristol, and beyond — often making multiple stops — all to ensure animals found safety, care, and loving homes.

Just days before his passing, Chris drove all the way to Bristol to set a trap for a stray dog wandering in the cold. Within hours, that dog was safe and warm at the Bristol, Virginia Animal Shelter — yet another life changed because Chris answered the call.

He was returning from one of his regular rescue transports when the accident occurred. Chris quite literally gave his life while saving others, embodying the very heart of compassion and sacrifice.

“Chris never failed to answer the call to rescue an animal in need,” shared Melissa Gentry of Rescue DOG & End of Life Sanctuary in Mountain City, Tennessee. “Whether he was saving dogs off the street, delivering food to pet owners in need, or sitting behind the wheel of his transport van every single week, Chris changed more lives than we can begin to imagine.”

This is a devastating loss for the rescue world and the communities he served. Chris Haverly leaves behind a legacy of kindness, courage, and relentless service — one that will live on in every animal he saved and every life he touched.

Rest in peace, Chris. You will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always honored.
